The Connection Between Stress and the Digestive System
We often talk about stress as something mental in horses. Environment, transport, competitions, or new routines.
But stress is just as much about physiology. When a horse is stressed, blood flow, hormones, and digestion are directly affected. The stomach becomes more sensitive, intestinal movements change, and discomfort can arise without us noticing it clearly.
The interesting thing is that the connection goes both ways. A stomach that doesn't function optimally, in turn, creates more stress in the body. The horse finds it harder to relax, reacts more quickly, and has less patience.
This is why feeding plays such a large role in behavior.
Fibers that require chewing time – like lucerne – can help the horse produce more saliva, which naturally buffers stomach acid. It sounds simple, but the effect can be significant.
Psyllium seeds are also a popular supplement that supports normal intestinal function and promotes balanced gut health.
A horse with a healthy gut has a greater chance of finding well-being in its daily life throughout the day.
